A drift study of vertical distribution and mortality of Engraulis anchoita eggs and larvae. OceanDocs

Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Adaptive features of a bacteriolytic enzyme from the style of the mussel Choromytilus meridionalis in response to environmental fluctuations. ArchiMer

The extracellular digestive apparatus of bivalve molluscs consists of a crystalline style containing diverse degradative enzymes which are released during rotation and dissolution of the style. This paper reviews the occurrence of a temperature-regulated bacteriolytic enzyme in the black mussel Choromytilus meridionalis , which is an inhabitant of coastal reefs on the south and south west coast of South Africa. This agent is unable to lyse Micrococcus luteus or Escherichia coli , both of which are susceptible to lysis by a true lysozyme. It appears to have a restricted spectrum of activity which includes both free-living and kelp-associated gram-negative bacteria. Los lenguados constituyen un importante recurso pesquero en el Mar Argentino. Más que en los volúmenes desembarcados (9 .731 t en 1991), esta importancia se centra en su elevado valor de comercialización debido a la alta calidad de su carne. Atendiendo a los desembarques totales realizados en el Mercado de Concentración Pesquera de Mar del Plata, los lenguados ocupan el octavo lugar. Two amylase genes, A and B, from the oyster Crassostrea gigas were characterized. Using PCR-RFLP, 6 and 4 alleles, respectively, were described for the amylase genes A and B. The roles of A and B amylase genes were investigated experimentally. They are expressed during larval and adult stages, and A transcripts are more abundant than B. The A transcript increases significantly with temperature, in high trophic conditions. However, A and B transcript levels do not change when food quantity increases although amylase activity augments. The level of B is correlated with dietary starch quantities, whereas the amount of A appears to remain constant ; simultaneously amylase activity decreases and the KM increases. Chitin/toxicant interactions and microbial degradation within estuarine ecosystems. ArchiMer

The environmental effect and fate of several agricultural and industrial source toxicants were evaluated in controlled laboratory microcosm systems in the presence of the aminopolysaccharide polymer, chitin. Toxicants examined included methyl parathion, phenol, pentachlorophenol, 2,4 dichlorophenol, 1,2 dichloroethane and Kepone. Microcosm operating parameters, including pH/Eh, salinity, temperature, flow rate and sediment/water interface conditions, were based on comparable in situ measurements. Land degradation is as a result of broad range of scales and factors, which include biophysical, climatic, demographic and socio-economic. The aim of this paper was to provide an analysis of wetland utilisation, ecosystem degradation and their effect on the Lake Victoria (Kenya) ecosystem. This involved analysis of socioeconomic and remote sensed data. The main sources of wetland degradation in the Lake Victoria basin were identified as (1) farming activities, (2) grazing and macrophyte harvesting and (3) coupled with catchment degradation-deforestation. Developpement des veligeres de Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin d'Arcachon. Etudes sur les mortalites larvaires. ArchiMer

Experiments in the hatchery rearing of C. gigas larvae showed that: the antifouling paints represent a real danger for spatting areas; the larvae of Arcachon breeding stocks grown in the seawater taken from the Bay develop normally in the laboratory; and, the growth of the larvae, collected from the Bay of Arcachon and reared in hatchery at 18 degree C, confirms that the last summer temperature regimes could not explain the abnormalities. It also confirms the good quality of the seawater of the bay for C. gigas reproduction.

The growth and survival of juvenile red porgy, Pagrus pagrus, reared in captivity (mean body weigth 81.0 not equal to 37.24g), exposed to two different temperatures (18 degree and 22 degree C)and three salinities (21, 27 and 33 psu)during a 30 day period, were studied. Final survival rate was 100. in all treatments. The highest growth rate was reached at 18 degree C/33 psu with a value of 1.07 /day. There was an inverse trend in the growth rate between the two temperatures. Food consumption increased with the increase of salinity and temperature. The highest food consumption rate was 1.17. Effects of environmental conditions on the sessile existence of an estuarine sediment bacterium. ArchiMer

A submerged glass coverslip technique was developed to determine dissolved organic nutrient uptake by adherent cells of a sediment isolate of Enterobacter cloacae . Cells which colonized the coverslips in swirling culture flasks during anaerobic growth remained firmly attached during manipulations employed to determine uptake of radiolabeled glucose by the adherent population. The attached cells were capable of a more rapid rate of glucose uptake than free cells. Lineweaver-Burk plots demonstrated different glucose uptake kinetics for the 2 cell populations. The data suggest that physiological changes occur in cells soon after they become attached to surfaces. These changes appear to enhance the metabolic activity of the adherent population.

Data on 1,294 superovulations of Brahman, Gyr, Guzerat and Nellore females were used to evaluate the effects of: breed; herd; year of birth; inbreeding coefficient and age at superovulation of the donor; month, season and year of superovulation; hormone source and dose; and the number of previous treatments on the superovulation results. Four data sets were considered to study the influence of donors’ elimination effect after each consecutive superovulation. Each one contained only records of the first, or of the two firsts, or three firsts or all superovulations. The average number of palpated corpora lutea per superovulation varied from 8.6 to 12.6. Environmental Benefits from Reduced Pesticide Use and Returns to Research: An Application to the U.S. Cotton Industry AgEcon

Cotton production is one of the main pesticide use industries in the U.S. This intensive use has resulted in the disruption of naturally occurring biological control factors that regulate other insect pest populations and “the pesticide treadmill”. The result is resistance to insecticides, high control costs and unacceptable levels of chemical insecticides in the environment. Concerns about the environmental and human health effects from pesticide use thus need to be modeled in evaluation studies.

The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute imported 12,300 curculionid weevils (Neochetina spp.) from diverse sources, for biological control of water hyacinth in Lake Victoria, as part of the World Bank-funded Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project in East Africa. In addition to the rearing and quarantine facility at Muguga, a second rearing facility was established in 1996 at Kibos, near Lake Victoria. The Kibos rearing facility and two community rearing facilities at the lakeshores, have produced approximately 100,000 adult weevils and 42,000 weevil eggs over a three-year period. The gatuzo, Mustelus schmitti, lives in the Southamerican Atlantic coastal waters from up to 23°S (Brazil)down to 47°S (Argentine), and is the greatest species of the Bonaerense and North Patagonian shores. This species is the most exploited elasmobranch of this region, within the last six years catch has exceeded 10,000 t per year and it is vulnerable to overexploitation due to reproductive aspects, with a low rate of changes, as well as distribution patterns.
